What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum Toxin is a muscle-relaxing medication that’s made from bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. Commonly known as Botox, it can effectively improve the appearance of facial wrinkles. Botulinum toxin A is approved for cosmetic use and botulinum toxin B is used for different types of muscle diseases. There are actually seven known types of botulinum toxin: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. Only toxins A and B are used clinically:

  • Onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox/Botox Cosmetic)
  • Rimabotulinumtoxin B (Myobloc)
  • Abobotulinumtoxin A (Dysport)
  • Incobotulinumtoxin A (Xeomin)

Botulinums also treat other problems, including a condition in which the neck muscles contract over and over (cervical dystonia), neck spasms, migraine headaches or lazy eye, and blinking you can’t control (blepharospasm).

How does Botox work?

Although Botulinum is the same toxin that causes botulism, its effects vary according to the amount and type of exposure. For example, Botox is only injected in small, targeted doses. When injected, Botox blocks signals from your nerves to your muscles. This prevents the targeted muscles from contracting, which can ease certain muscular conditions and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox or Botulinum Toxin works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, resulting in paralysis of the local muscles, which usually occurs 24 hrs to two weeks following Botox injection. This effect is said to last three to six months.

Botox is relatively safe (in small doses) and does not result in any adverse side effects. However, in certain circumstances, the effect of Botox will gradually resolve, resulting in reduced muscle paralysis over time.

Some of the most popular types of Botox are Innotox, Botox, Baby Botox, and Botulax.

Why Botox injections are done?

Botox injections block certain chemical signals from nerves, mostly signals that cause muscles to contract. The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes.

Botox injections are also used to treat conditions that affect how the body functions. Examples include:

Cervical dystonia. In this painful condition, your neck muscles contract involuntarily causing your head to twist or turn into an uncomfortable position.

Lazy eye. The most common cause of the lazy eye is an imbalance in the muscles responsible for positioning the eye.

Muscle contractures. Some neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, can cause your limbs to pull in toward your center. In some cases, these contracted muscles can be relaxed with Botox injections.

Hyperhidrosis. In this condition, excessive sweating occurs even when the temperature isn’t hot and you’re not exerting yourself.

Chronic migraine. If you experience migraines more than 15 days a month, Botox injections may help reduce headache frequency.

Bladder dysfunction. Botox injections can also help reduce urinary incontinence caused by an overactive bladder.

Eye twitching. Botox injections may help relieve contracture or twitching of muscles around the eye.

How do we store botulinum toxins in our warehouses?

We take special care of the handling and storing of all of our products in our warehouses. Our warehouses are fully equipped with refrigerators that can store products containing botulinum toxins at a temperature of 1° C to 10° C. In this condition, they can be kept in storage for up to four years (depending on the product).

We also monitor the temperature of our warehouses and any shifts in temperature are detected by a temperature controller. Such strict compliance with storage conditions enables us to ensure our customers that our products containing botulinum toxins are effective and safe.

When we transport products containing botulinum toxins, we place the products in a separate container with ice packs so that it remains to be stored at a low temperature. The volume of ice is carefully calculated, based on the shipping destination and the number of products to ensure that the temperature is well-kept until the point of delivery to the customer.
